marketing methods

The purpose of this article is to give useful marketing methods to musicians.

However, all of the info in this blog article is very relevant for people in ANY industry.

Today, there are two main areas to hit in your marketing methods:  offline and online.  Your ability to successfully navigate these two areas will greatly increase the amount of exposure that you will receive.

Offline Marketing
For ideas in this method, you can refer to our previous article to read about ways to meet musicians (http://www.providencebrass.com/2013/07/09/how-to-meet-musicians/).  Basically, there are two main things that you want to make sure that you do at every gig:

  1. Be friendly and helpful to everyone around you
  2. Exchange contact info with everyone that you meet

Many people create business cards, and this can be a great inexpensive marketing method.  There are websites like Vista Print that will actually design and create free business cards for you!  The important thing to remember on your business card is to keep it simple.  Include the following info:

  1. Your name
  2. Your instrument
  3. Your music group’s name (if applicable)
  4. Phone number
  5. Email

The most effective offline marketing strategy is word of mouth.  In fact, studies will show that this marketing method can be as much as ten times more effective in promoting you than any other method.  So, how do you encourage word of mouth?

  1. Ask for testimonials from your customers
  2. Create a referral program (give a gift for a referral)

Online Marketing
All of the online strategies discussed here are based on the information in Michael Hyatt’s book Platform (http://amzn.to/1aopH1C).  If you really want to master online marketing, this book is an absolute MUST to read.

There are three main areas that you want to include in your marketing methods:
1.  Your home base (your website)
2.  Embassies (social networking sites like Facebook)
3.  Outreach (like relevant discussion forums)

Your Home Base
Your website is a crucial part of your marketing efforts, because through Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques, you can show up on Google searches.  If people can search for you, that is a GREAT thing.  The most effective type of website for creating Google rankings is a blog.  Through consistent postings, you drive readers to your website on a regular basis, and Google loves this!

You can create a great self hosted website through Blue Host (CLICK HERE TO SIGNUP FOR BLUEHOST.COM).  Once you create a Blue Host account and purchase a domain name (www.yourwebsitename.com), you can use either WordPress or Weebly to create websites easily.  The Providence Brass website is an example of a WordPress website.

Embassies
There are two places that you NEED to have a presence:  Facebook Pages (not a personal profile) and Linked In.  Twitter, Pinterest, and Google Plus are good, but you will get the most bang from your buck on Facebook and Linked In.  These sites are called embassies, because they are not your sites.  You can create an online presence that you control on these sites, but the purpose of them should be to redirect people back to your website.

You can also use these embassies to network with others and to promote other people’s and your blog posts.  Use services like Hootsuite to schedule postings ahead of time, and through consistent content posting, you help to establish yourself as an expert.

Outreach
Discussion forums are a great way to connect with people in your industry from all over the planet.  Your goal should be to interact and be as helpful as possible to others.  Whenever you post on one of these sites, include your website link and Facebook/Linked In links.  You would be surprised by how many people will click on your links.

Question:  What marketing methods have you found to be effective for your career?
